Interaction of Color is not solely for artists, though generations of them certainly owe Albers a debt. It is for anyone who wants to get under the hood and understand why and how we see the world the way we do. The answer is an enthusiastic yes, for here is a book which belongs in the studio and classroom that for years has been available only in the best university.

It is an indispensable volume for the artist, architect, or teacher who finds a greater challenge in discovery than in a 'safe' color system. Interaction of Color is a record of an experimental way of studying and teaching color. What he says will be useful in any kind of painting. His teaching is based on learning by direct perception, not by theories or color systems. There are many books on color on the market, but no one combines eyesight with such profound insight as Josef Albers peer reviews in Interaction of Color.

In 1933 he came to the United States, where he taught at Black Mountain College for sixteen years. In 1950 he joined johnson dorohedoro faculty at Yale University as chairman of the department of design. Albers was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1968 and was professor emeritus of art at Yale until his death in 1976.

The book contains a few color plates in the back - they get the point across, but don't make for a visually engaging reading experience. The book obviously had a great influence on many people, but if you're looking for something more "user friendly" rather than historically authoritative, I would recommend you check out "Playing with Color" by Richard Mehl, who was also heavily influenced by "Interaction of Color".

If you creative people blessed with any sight all, buy it and enter the magic. My experience was almost 45 years ago and I am still conscious and appreciative in both my artistic and daily life of the lessons learned.

Verified Purchase You get what you pay for, I guess. My comments are not about the content of this book, but about the presentation of the content in this book itself.

I bought this book to give to a friend, but I scanned through it before I did so. The text is small and oddly justified - leaving many Factor IX Complex Intravenous Administration (Bebulin VH)- Multum less than half filled with text. Also, and maybe I am missing something, but, for a book about the interaction of color, there isn't much color to be found in this book. There are more expensive and larger-format versions of this book available. Maybe those are executed well enough to do justice to the content.

Verified Purchase Josef Albers was first a student, then an instructor, and finally a professor at the famous Bauhaus school of art and design in pre-war Germany.

When the Nazis video woman sex the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933, Albers emigrated to the United States where he was made head of the Black Mountain College School of Art, in North Carolina. He later joined the design faculty at Yale University.
